Workshop Aims
The aim of this workshop is to open up debate and understand the challenges associated with achieving a more effective use of logistics and the logistical network within the UK.
The outcome will inform the scoping of the Technology Strategy Board’s forthcoming Informed Logistics funding intervention, which seeks to build on the information economy and apply a systems engineering approach to integrate existing ITS technologies for the benefit of the logistics industry.
Workshop participants will be given the opportunity to participate in a facilitated process aimed at identifying and prioritising some of the challenges and issues associated with better planning and execution of logistics in the UK. We will then discuss some of the barriers that prevent resolution of the identified issues; taking into account the existing technologies, capabilities, services and systems that could contribute to addressing them.
The aim is to identify ways we could:
•Encourage the development of real-time ITS, based informed logistics services to the freight industry.
•Support a more effective use of our logistics resources and infrastructure
•Enable the integration of technologies for strategic management of road/rail/marine networks
•Enable more efficient route dynamics for the movement of freight across the UK network,
The workshop is to be “issues and barriers” led and is not intended to result in any formulation of pre-determined solutions. What we are after is a good formulation of the key challenges that need to be resolved in order for the UK to move forward in this area. The audience needs to have an open mind and offer evidence-based examples.
The Technology Strategy Board is also offering this challenge to the logistics industry to help determine not only what the issues are, but also “what success would look like”. The resulting inputs will assist the Intelligent Transport Systems and Services Innovation Platform (ITSS IP) of the Technology Strategy Board in formulating a competition for funding in this area.
The Informed Logistics intervention forms part of a series of activities that is aimed at addressing the societal challenge which the ITSS IP has been tasked with, namely congestion. The ITSS IP is addressing the issue of congestion mainly by asking the question “how do we move people and goods more intelligently”, and has engaged the ITS KTN to challenge industry to define a future intervention namely Informed Logistics. In working with the ITS KTN and experts from the industry this workshop seeks to gain new ground in the development of marketable solutions that people will wish to use and buy, thus engaging the end user in the process.
