Organisation Description

The School of Computing provides a range of modern degree programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has a lively PhD training programme. Our degrees provide in depth coverage of computing topics, with an emphasis on user-centred design and software engineering, and with a strong real-world focus: alongside mainstream computing subjects, students will typically undertake work placements, and will study modules such as Technology Innovation Management and Programming for the Internet. These modules, and others throughout our range of degrees, benefits from strong industrial and commercial input from companies such as 2in10, Yahoo!, Microsoft and IBM, with the aim of creating in students a realistic introduction to the world of business and work while they are studying. Our degrees range from Applied Computing, e-Commerce Computing, Computing & International Business and Interactive Media Design (with Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design) to highly focused programmes like Computing with Vision & Imaging. The School scores highly in newspaper league tables as a place to study computing subjects (for example in the top 20 in the UK in the Guardian).

The School of Computing obtained a very high ranking in the latest 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (the RAE is the way the university funders rate the quality of research in the UK) and has a current research spend of over £3M annually. Our research focuses around the themes of Computational Systems, Interactive Systems Design, Assistive and Healthcare Technologies, and we also host the Space Technology Centre. The focus of our research on real world applications and the genuine involvement of people throughout the design and development processes is reflected in our teaching programmes and gives them, and the research itself a unique quality.

We are assisted by an active Industrial Advisory Board chaired by David Farquhar of 2in10 and including members from Cisco, Microsoft, Scottish Enterprise, NCR, Realtime Worlds & Chevron.

The University of Dundee is a Scottish Registered Charity, No. SC015096.
