ATOS Origin shows its support for the Beatson Institute for cancer research
A team from leading international IT services company Atos Origin visits Glasgow’s famous Beatson Institute for Cancer Research to donate new equipment to help cancer patients as part of its own approach to corporate social responsibility.
A team from Atos Origin took time out of their busy work schedules this week to visit the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in the West End of Glasgow, to donate a £4400 piece of equipment - a Tecan Sunrise Microplate to help the charity to continue to deliver their fantastic work for cancer patients.
Following a tour of the facilities, the Atos Origin team presented Sandeep Talapatra with the new kit which is a vital piece of cancer treating laboratory research equipment which analyses cell movements. Sandeep Talapatra works alongside group leader - Professor Kozielski at the institute who heads up the Molecular Motors – advanced technology group. His team are investigating a family of proteins called ‘kinesins’, a group of proteins that play an important role in healthy cells.
As one of Cancer Research UK’s core-funded institutes, the Beatson carries out a programme of world-class science directed at understanding key aspects of cancer cell behaviour, and then tries to translate these discoveries into new therapies and diagnostic/prognostic tools to help cancer patients.
Atos Origin helped to raise the monies through collective fundraising at their offices in Linwood, Livingston and Dundee as well as through a number of corporate events including its own UK team who took part in a 460km charity cycle from Paris to Eindhoven. Cancer Research UK is one of the company’s corporate selected charities in Scotland and has also raised over £11, 500 for its cause.
Steve Langmead, Senior Vice President – Scotland at Atos Origin, said: “For Atos Origin in Scotland – making a difference in the local community is important. Cancer Research UK is a great charity that helps to save millions of lives by discovering new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. The Beatson Institute is a shining example of the successful initiatives that can be delivered with the right levels of support.”
“The charity fits well within our organisation, given that the Atos Origin Alliance are NHSScotland’s IT services partner for Health and Social Care. Our people provide support and development capability for the majority of NHSScotland’s national cancer screening systems which ultimately help to improve patient care for the people of Scotland.”
Professor Frank Kozielski of the Beatson, said:”The new kit helps to save time and allows us to screen samples 96 times quicker than normal. It plays a vital role in helping us continue and develop our research in the fight against cancer. A big thank you to Atos Origin, for their continued interest and support in the work that we do.”
