GTA IV Misses Out on Games Bafta's
Despite being nominated for 7 awards, GTA IV, the hugely successful game developed by Edinburgh based Rockstar Games, failed to collect any awards last night at the 2009 British Academy of Film and Television Arts video games ceremony. A major commercial and critical success, Grand Theft Auto IV broke industry records with sales of around 3.6 million units on its first day of release and grossed more than $500 million in revenue in the first week, from an estimated 6 million units sold worldwide.
Call of Duty 4 took three awards, for Gameplay; Story and Character and was picked as the People's Choice. Dead Space won Best Use of Audio and Best Original Score. The shock of the ceremony was Super Mario Galaxy being picked as Game of the Year. British game makers were represented with Codemasters and Lionhead getting awards for their work on Race Driver: Grid and Fable II respectively. Film director Steven Spielberg won an award for his work on casual game Boom Blox for the Nintendo Wii.
The Video Game Baftas are given out to recognise "the very best in artistic, creative and technical innovation in video games".
