ICT Trade body warns of underperforming businesses in e-commerce
Some Scottish businesses have benefited from e-commerce – such as Barrhead Travel, GuitarGuitar and M&Co, the fashion retailer.
But ScotlandIS, trade body for the information, communication and technology industries, warned Scotland was underperforming in e-commerce compared to the rest of the UK.
According to the Office for National Statistics, the UK is near the top of the European Union table for making purchases and receiving orders online. The value of e-commerce sales in the UK by non-financial businesses was £408bn in 2009, an increase of 25 per cent on the previous year.
Boston Consulting Group last year pointed out that the UK was a net exporter of e-commerce goods and services, exporting £2.80 for every £1 imported. This was the opposite of the trend seen in the offline economy, which exported 90p for every £1 imported.
