New Wellness and Health Showcase opens at Glasgow Science Centre

Yesterday sees the launch of the new Wellness and Health Innovation showcases at the Glasgow Science Centre’s Be Creative, Be Innovative exhibition.   The showcases include 4 of Scotland’s leading innovative products for the wellness and health sector in Scotland; Designovator who has developed the Shoogle which is an interactive exercise home fitness product for children; FitZone which is an exercise programme and equipment aimed at home or gym use; Ex02 who have developed a range of heat therapy and clothing products and Robomotic who have developed a platform for the integration of medical and home automation networks.

The Wellness and Health Innovation project is a Scottish Enterprise initiative that has helped more than 240 companies explore and develop new products, services and applications for the newly emerging Wellness and Health Marketplace.  In its 3rd year, the project has become an important linchpin for the Wellness and Health Marketplace linking together SMEs in this sector with key decision makers from large organisations.  Peter Range, Managing Director of Alere Connected Health is headling the showcase event tonight to explore and share opportunities for his Telehealth and Telemedicine Managed Services programmes to the NHS and private sector companies.   Peter has over 12 years ‘hands-on’ experience with the consultation, design, project management and implementation of Telecare, Telemedicine and Telehealth projects in the UK, EU, North America, Middle East and Africa.  Peter will be joined on stage with Janette Hughes, Project Manager from Wellness and Health Innovation who will share the highlights from the recently published Wellness and Health Innovation annual report.

Research indicates that there are many potential growth areas for investment and start-up opportunities.  The global market for elder-care technologies is set at $2.6billion today and projected to achieve 8.7% CAGR and will reach $4billion in 2015.  The detection and cure market is estimated to reach $1bn by 2012 (source BBC Research).   The Wellness and Health Innovation project has been instrumental in growing Scotland’s community of wellness and health companies across Scotland and helping early stage companies tap into this growing market share.  Claire Cordeaux, Lead for Health and Social Care for SIMUL8 Corporation said, “SIMUL8 Corporation has really benefitted from working with Wellness and Health Innovation.  They have been excellent at making introductions to key organisations who might find it useful to use simulation and in linking us to health service managers who can help us understand the reality of day to day practice and the key problems they need to overcome.”

Janette Hughes, project director of Wellness and Health Innovation said, “It is great that we are able to showcase Scotland’s leading products and services from the wellness and health market in the Glasgow Science Centre.  This will help the general public see what innovation is being created in Scotland and understand how these new products can benefit them.  Our showcase event tonight is bringing together professionals from local authorities, NHS24, Universities,  as well as corporate partners and SMEs in the wellness and health sector to find new ways to work together.”
