Will Apple join the netbook party?

Long-standing rumours that Apple intends to plug the gaping hole in its product line-up with a netbook are swirling stronger than ever online, with the revelation of this patent filed last year in the United States.

According to the technology website Gizmodo, the proposed machine might offer a touch-screen operating system similar to that already used by the iPhone and iPod touch. The site even has an impressive-looking mock-up of its idea for the machine.

Apple chief Steve Jobs last pronounced on the company’s netbook plans in October 2008. "We don't know how to make a $500 computer that's not a piece of junk, and our DNA will not let us ship that."

He did, however, concede that were the market to develop, “we have got some pretty interesting ideas.” Could what is essentially a giant iPod Touch be one of them?
