Leading Scottish software and IT services company, Castle Computer Services, has developed a unique online calculator that will help companies save up to 90% of their IT server costs and at the same time reduce their carbon footprint.
The Power Savings Calculator differs from the many other so called "green calculators" by taking the company’s top selling VMware virtual server solution and applying the savings possible by using the technology.
Alan Quinn, Managing Director, Castle Computer Services, said:"Most servers only run at 7% capacity, but virtualisation improves efficiency, allowing a ten for one server ratio. The estimated annual cost to run and maintain thirty servers, including depreciation, is about 45,600gbp. But to run a virtualised version of the same system costs just a tenth of that figure, saving 90% of the cost each year; that’s a 41,000gbp saving every year and doesn’t even include the elimination of expensive out-of-hours routine system maintenance, reduced costs associated with administration, re-utilisation of office space and a sizeable reduction in cooling requirements.
"As well as the pure financial gains there are tangible environmental benefits. Our online calculator is unique because it uses tables from DEFRA to calculate reductions in carbon footprint. Virtualising thirty servers would save 197,964 kWh of power; equivalent to removing 84 cars from the road and planting 268 new trees."
