Introduction

ScotlandIS, the membership and cluster management organisation for Scotland’s digital technologies industry, is focused on delivering real value to its members and the wider sector. The organisation is at the heart of Scotland’s digital economy, working to shape, change and drive the industry forward. In order to achieve their strategic objectives, the team works with a broad range of members and partners across the country, supporting the digital transformation of businesses and society.  

ScotlandIS provides members with connections across the digital technologies industry; produces and promotes relevant market intelligence; and acts as a single voice for the industry to policy makers. Ensuring a continuing supply of current and future skills is a major area of focus, and the organisation facilitates a range of special interest groups, including cyber, data, infrastructure, software engineering, and Mobility as a Service (MaaS). They work closely with Scottish Government, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Scottish Enterprise, Scottish Funding Council and Skills Development Scotland, underlining the importance of the technology industry to the Scottish economy. ScotlandIS helped establish The Data Lab, runs e-Placement Scotland and the Digital Skills Partnership, and set up CodeClan. The team organises over 40 events a year, including Scotland’s largest technology conference, ScotSoft, and the Digital Technology Awards.

The organisation has ambitious plans for growth and will continue playing a leading role in building a high-performing digital economy within Scotland. Role Overview

Due to the impending retirement of the current incumbent, ScotlandIS is seeking to appoint an inspirational leader in the role of CEO. The CEO will have a unique remit to drive positive and lasting growth for both ScotlandIS members and the wider digital technologies industry in Scotland. For the right individual, this role will offer a fantastic opportunity to take on a new challenge, building on the organisation’s strong track record to lead it through its next phase of expansion.

Providing clear strategic and commercial leadership, the CEO will be instrumental in developing the forward strategy for ScotlandIS, ensuring that it delivers value to its members, plays a leading role in building a vibrant digital economy within Scotland, and transitions successfully into a full cluster management organisation. With a proven track record in organisational management and growing sustainable businesses, the successful candidate will work with the COO and the wider team to develop and lead the membership, cluster development, marketing, finance and human resources functions in support of the strategic aims of the organisation. In order to achieve this, the CEO will bring a strong commercial focus to the organisation, enabling both revenue growth and the expansion of current activities to provide greater benefits to members. The ability to inspire, develop and motivate the existing high performing team is therefore essential.

Demonstrating passion for excellence and innovation, the CEO will be the champion and public face of the organisation and its values, nurturing relationships with members and a broad spectrum of stakeholder groups. This role requires a significant proportion of time to be spent out of office, engaging with member companies, Scottish Government and other relevant bodies such as Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Funding Council. The successful candidate must also be comfortable undertaking press and spokesperson responsibilities as an ambassador for ScotlandIS, ensuring appropriate and relevant commentary in the promotion of key initiatives and messages.  

An experienced leader, the CEO will be tasked with developingmanaging and building the ScotlandIS team, which has recently expanded with the appointment of several new roles. Sophisticated communication skills and high levels of empathy will therefore be crucial, and this individual must demonstrate the ability to lead growing teams successfully through periods of change. 

The successful candidate should have a comprehensive understanding of digital technologies and the business landscape, but in-depth computer science and electronics knowledge is not a prerequisite for this role. 

Key Responsibilities

Strategy, Leadership and Development

  • Work with the board to provide strategic direction for the organisation and team.
  • Develop high quality business strategies and plans, ensuring alignment with both short-term and long-term objectives.
  • Lead, develop and motivate the ScotlandIS team, ensuring the organisation continues to have a positive, people-centric, collaborative and agile culture.
  • Build an increasing focus on excellent membership services and cluster management delivery.
  • Drive the organisation to achieve and surpass sales, profitability, cash flow and business goals and objectives.

Governance and Financial Management

  • Oversee the company’s finances, including financial planning and budgeting.
  • Develop the commercial model to ensure the ongoing financial success of the organisation.
  • Ensure quality standards and accreditations are maintained, (i.e cluster management certification, cyber security and people management practices).
  • Oversee robust governance, and ensure risk management processes are in place. Report to the board on a regular basis and attend all board meetings.

Championing the Organisation

  • Act as the primary “champion” for ScotlandIS, representing the organisation at external events and to the press.
  • Seek opportunities to expand and promote the membership of ScotlandIS, locally and internationally.
  • Build strong relations with members and key partners, and act as a primary point of contact for members.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with external stakeholders, including technology industry representatives, government and other public agencies, academic institutions, politicians and influencers.

 

Required Knowledge / Experience

  • Proven experience as a CEO or in another relevant senior management role.
  • Demonstrable track record of managing a diverse range of functions throughout your career.
  • Commercially astute, with experience in developing profitable strategies, implementing vision and driving the achievement of objectives.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of corporate governance and general management best practices.
  • Proven relationship and people management skills; proven “people person” with a focus on building positive relationships both internally and externally.
  • Skilled leader, with a pedigree of building and motivating high-performance teams.
  • A deep understanding of the digital technologies industry – detailed technical experience is not required, but the successful candidate should demonstrate a clear interest and passion for the growth of technology in Scotland.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with strong organisational and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrable analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills and comfortable undertaking public speaking engagements.
  • High emotional intelligence and the ability to engage effectively with people across all sectors and levels.
  • “Big Picture” thinker, with the ability to craft and communicate a strong vision for the future of the organisation.
