Having been lured by the bright lights of a job in City banking in London, I woke up, smelt the coffee and changed career. A role at Scottish Software Federation followed, and I loved the job so much that they couldn’t get rid of me. Being CEO of ScotlandIS is one of the most interesting jobs you could ask for, working in a fascinating, fast moving industry, which always has new challenges to offer, and is full of lovely people. Spare time ? Gardening, cycling and holidays. In my dreams ? An aston martin volante soft top :-).
Started my working life as an office junior in a training company in Edinburgh, managed to amass lots of redundancy payments between then and joining ScotlandIS 12 years ago! Polly employed me as a Membership Liaison Officer so it was my job to look after our members and the services we provided. 12 years on I’m Head of Operations. Random fact about me, I eat - A LOT, I never sneeze only one time, its multiple sneezes in rapid succession!! I can’t cook, I hate exercise but I love reality TV.
A Mathematics and Statistics graduate from the University of Glasgow, I currently head public sector liaison at ScotlandIS. I’ve been involved in the IT industry since 1978. During that time I have worked for ICL, IBM, Logica, Microgen and SAIC in a wide range of senior sales, marketing and management roles. I have also worked overseas having spent 2 years in Dubai. Also have an involvement in the third sector, as both a volunteer adviser and member of the management committee for the Citizens Advice Bureau in West Lothian. This supports part of my role at ScotlandIS with the SCVO Digital Participation team.
After graduating with an honours degree in marketing from The University of Stirling, I quickly realised that the future was digital. I was accepted for a graduate scheme in Milton Keynes, learning everything from account management to sales and marketing and events management. Having never really travelled before, I was amazed at what I found just across the border – with a new found independence, I had the time of my life living in a five bedroom house in the Buckinghamshire countryside with an Englishman, an Irishman, an Australian and a South African (sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, I know), whilst propelling my career in marketing. I then spent a few years in Glasgow working in various digital marketing roles, from writing adverts to managing website development projects and marketing campaigns. Being hugely passionate about the future of digital technologies in Scotland, I am thrilled to be working for ScotlandIS and managing the e-Placement Scotland programme. In my spare time, I love a good TV show (does anything beat Breaking Bad?), playing videogames, looking after my two cats, and keeping fit.
I graduated from the University of Aberdeen with a Law Degree, and found myself completing various temporary assignments through recruitment agency. This is what gave me my first taste of the recruitment industry and I decided that I would like to experience it from the other side. I first started working for a construction recruitment agency and then moved onto the oil and gas sector. I eventually settled on IT recruitment when I joined ScotlandIS nearly three years ago. I am very passionate about my job and you will often find me checking emails at bed time. My other passions my family and like most woman - shoes! "Give a woman the right pair of shoes and she can accomplish anything"
I was born South African, however am from Scottish descent and when I came on holiday to Scotland I loved it that much I decided to stay, despite the weather! I love cooking as much as I love eating and therefore try and go for a run at least 3 times a week to try and keep the weight off. I am a total adrenaline junkie and love extreme sports and have actually walked away from a serious bunjee accident with just a few scars. Needless to say I just had to go back and try it again and at least the second time I got it right… I believe anything is possible if we set our mind to it. I believe magic is real and all around us and as a White Witch practice magic as much as possible. I am also a level 2 Reiki healer.
During my interview Polly asked me why I wanted to work with ScotlandIS, my answer? I love member organisations and being able to help and grow the trade body to better serve the membership.
And I meant every word. My background is a mix of trade association and private sector and I can say with my hand on my heart that my most fulfilling role was within a trade association setting. Watching the growth in membership and our members professionally after a long fought campaign to introduce new legislation into the industry, supporting sole traders to grow into SME’s, launching awards and publications to better promote members and get them the recognition locally and nationally that they deserved - those were just a few of the things I enjoyed the most.
My background is in marketing, communication and events and I have a particular love of digital marketing and social media. If there is anything I can do to help further or promote your business, please do get in touch. I’d love to help.
Being originally from the North of Germany, I studied European Politics in Bavaria and France and started my career in public affairs and policy research roles in Brussels. At the end of 2013, I moved to Edinburgh and soon started working as an events developer for Holyrood Communications. There, I researched and organised conferences mainly on topics related to IT and digital in the public sector and education. Thus, I learned a lot about digital technologies and got fascinated with their potential for transforming our economy, government and society. I am delighted to be part of ScotlandIS now and to help our member to drive digital transformation in Scotland and beyond. My job is to gather more information about the digital technologies industry in Scotland, e.g. the number of employees, their salaries and the value of the industry to the overall economy. I will also update our members on all policy developments that could affect them and make sure the industry’s voice will be heard by policy makers.
In my spare time, I love baking, reading detective stories and cycling.
