Stop Press: Tech sector's demand for skilled people increases - again!

Here at ScotlandIS, we've just released our annual Scottish Technology Industry Survey.  The report highlights that 80% of businesses surveyed expect to increase employee numbers in the next 12 months, up from 66% in 2016.  80% of businesses are also planning for growth in 2018, with nearly one third forecasting more than 50% increase in sales.

This authoritative report provides a barometer of the health of Scotland's digital technologies industry and with over 10 years of 'back catalogue' provides valuable insights into key trends across the sector.

According to the survey results, 2017 was a good year for most businesses, with 68% recording improved sales and 47% increasing their profit margins.

Key challenges highlighted include staff recruitment and retention, with 73% of respondents confirming they are ‘definitely’ or ‘quite likely’ to recruit graduates – a figure which has remained relatively steady over the past five years. Software and web development are the most in demand technical skills with java, javascript and python topping the list.  Other top performers were cloud computing, cyber security and data related skills (data analytics, SQL and R).
