23feb1:00 pm2:00 pmDomestic IoT vulnerabilities: real-world examples and why security improvements are much needed

Event Details

Join NCC Group’s event as part of Cyber Scotland Week.

Last year NCC Group worked with UK consumer champion Which? to investigate the security of various domestic IoT products – these included Internet connected toys, doorbells, and smart plugs. Our research identified a number of security, privacy and safety issues across most devices, highlighting the need for improved IoT security standards, regulation and certification in order to protect the safety and security of consumers.

In this talk we walk through some of the security and safety vulnerabilities that we uncovered, and show examples of where we had some devices successfully removed from online marketplaces. Moreover, in this presentation we’ll highlight the common areas where domestic IoT security fails; what consumers should look out for, and what they can do themselves by way of secure device configuration and operation to minimise risk.
