Getting to know you: Mike Newman, CEO, My1Login

Where did your passion for digital come from?

I taught myself computer programming as a child in the 80s and loved being able to start with a “blank canvas” and build software that was only limited by your imagination. I used to write everything from stock trackers and games to music generators – it was tremendous fun and, with the computer-memory limitations of the time, a great learning experience about how to code in the most efficient way possible. After graduating from University, my career was centred around management roles in technology companies which further compounded my passion for tech.

What’s your favourite thing about the industry?

The technology industry is incredible at rapidly innovating to solve problems and improve people’s lives. The barriers to entry are low, and access to computing power is readily available at a scale that was unimaginable even 20 years ago.

Where do you see yourself/your company in five years?

We’ve been fortunate to receive a number of industry awards recently in recognition of our Identity and Access Management products that eliminate the need for enterprise users to require multiple logins and passwords. As a result, we’ve seen huge growth in our sales to enterprises, primarily within our target market in the UK. In five years we would anticipate a more pan-European and broader international sales focus.

What’s your role and what does a typical day involve?

Every day is different, whether it’s working with the team meeting existing customers, new prospects, or reviewing business strategy and product roadmaps. There is no typical day and it’s great. Some people might not like the idea that every day is different, but I thrive on it and enjoy overcoming the new challenges brought about each day.

Looking to the future, what do you see as being the next big thing in tech?

I’ll avoid the usual suspects like A.I., IoT and Big Data, as it’s really the practical applications of these areas that will become the next big things. One technology that incorporates all of these areas is autonomous vehicles, these are advancing at a real rate of knots and will create entire new ecosystems and applications. From transport and logistics industries to commuter travel – change is coming fast, in fact I would be surprised if a child born today will need a driving license by the time they are 17…. unless of course they want to drive a car that doesn’t drive itself….perhaps such as an old classic from 2025……

Any new products, services, events coming up for your business?

Image if you could eliminate the risk of your employees being phished…..Our core product set enables enterprise users to log into their computer, after which, My1Login will seamlessly authenticate them with any other corporate applications they are permitted to access, for both web and desktop executable applications. However, one of our recent product releases can be used to eliminate the risk of users falling victim to phishing attacks that could put their organisation at risk of a data breach. With My1Login, a central policy can be set, per application, to force an update to users’ passwords for that application, making them long, random, high-entropy passwords. The new passwords can be hidden from users, so they can use them to log into the application but not see the password on the My1Login system and if users don’t know the password, how can they be phished for it?

What’s your favourite thing about your job?

It’s great to receive feedback from our customers about how using our product has delighted users and addressed major compliance and cyber-security issues.
