Aberdeenshire based tech experts create new Alexa skill to help improve wellbeing

Aberdeenshire based TL Tech Smart Home Solutions have announced their new Alexa skill is now available in the Amazon Alexa Skill store. The new skill is called Kindspace and is a unique voice-first experience that allows you to track and improve your general wellbeing.  It brings greater awareness to your key wellbeing indicators at a time when finding balance and managing self-care can be difficult.

The skill is free to use and works by the user carrying out daily check-ins to help understand their energy levels and feelings. The user can also ask Kindspace for the tip of the day or specific advice on a range of aspects from sleep, exercise, nutrition, relationships, and mindfulness. Studies have shown that over half of users are using their smart speaker devices more frequently now than before Covid-19 and 3 in 5 users agreed that their voice assistant helped them to get through isolation.

TL Tech provides tailored smart home technology in people’s homes to allow them to interact with their homes and families using everyday consumer electronics like voice assistants. Their mission is to empower people regardless of age, technical ability, or finances to adopt digital solutions and create a unique caring, and entertaining home environment.

TL Tech founder, Thomas Laurenson, was recently a finalist in the Digital Volunteer Award category of the Tech4Good Awards 2020 after creating a knowledge hub on the company website for people looking to get started with voice assistants during lockdown to maintain social contact. He also held regular live Facebook tutorials to showcase and answer questions about the device set-up and functionality.

As part of the Tech4Good awards finals, the company set up a crowdfunding campaign to raise £1,500 to complete the build and testing of the Kindspace skill following a £10k initial investment by TL Tech in research and development. TL Tech surpassed its target and raised a total of £1,925.

Caroline Laurenson co-founder of Kindspace and Managing Director of TL Tech said: “We’re really excited for the launch of Kindspace. Technologies like smart homes and voice assistants have amazing power to transform our lives and enhance our wellbeing.  There’s some really compelling research that shows the use of voice assistants has increased dramatically as a direct result of us all spending more time at home and that people are finding them really supportive in alleviating loneliness.”

Thomas added “I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who donated to our Crowdfunder and helped to complete the build and testing of the Kindspace skill. This funding means we can make the skill available for free and help raise awareness of the benefits of voice assistants.”
