Protecting SMEs from cyber threats in the spotlight at Aberdeen security event

Businesspeople in Aberdeen are being encouraged to attend an expert seminar aimed at protecting organisations against cyber security threats.

IT security specialist, The TechForce, is holding a lunch-and-learn event, ‘Cyber Essentials Demystified’, at the Aberdeenshire Cricket Club, Morningside Road on Tuesday, April 23 (11:30am to 2pm).

Managing director Jai Aenugu will be joined by Robbie Ross of Police Scotland’s cybercrime prevention unit to explore the benefits of achieving the government-backed Cyber Essentials certification – an industry-supported scheme to help organisations protect themselves against common online threats.

The TechForce was recently awarded Approved Cyber Essentials Practitioner status to help guide clients through the fundamental ways to protect their business-critical information and Cyber Essentials Plus to explain cyber security controls.

Jai Aenugu said: “We’re looking forward to hosting this seminar along with Police Scotland and the opportunity to raise awareness around this important issue to a diverse audience of businesspeople.

“More than 80% of successful cyber-attacks could have been prevented if the basic security controls had been in place and adhered to. This event will help delegates identify which certification is right for them and the process involved in making their business as secure as possible.”

Robbie Ross, cybercrime safety, prevention and resilience liaison officer at Police Scotland, added: “This is an excellent opportunity for businesses in the north-east to learn more about the cyber-attacks affecting organisations today and how Cyber Essentials can help better protect them.”

Money raised from the event will benefit Charlie House, a city-based charity that supports babies, children and young people with complex disabilities and life-limiting conditions.

The event is being held as part of Cyber Scotland Week (April 22-28), a Scottish Government backed initiative to showcase innovation and promote career opportunities across the sector. Limited tickets are available from £10 (plus VAT) per person and can be purchased via Eventbrite https://bit.ly/2VejfXU.
