ScotlandIS Member Spotlight: StratoLabs
In this Member Spotlight we hear from new Startup member, StratoLabs, about joining ScotlandIS to contribute to Scotland’s cyber and tech community, and the ongoing challenges of AI, fraud, and scaling beyond the home market that Scottish tech firms face.
Who is StratoLabs and what do you do?
StratoLabs is an Edinburgh-based strategic advisory firm working where telecommunications, cyber security and AI meet. We help organisations in three ways. We shape strategy against mobile messaging fraud and AI-driven threats. We take international cyber companies into the US market. And we help founders scale without burning capital. Our clients are cyber security vendors, technology platforms and organisations in regulated industries. Built in Scotland, serving the world.
Tell us something unique or interesting about your organisation.
StratoLabs is built on operating experience, not theory. Our founder spent over two decades working with mobile network operators, banks, technology platforms, regulators, law enforcement and governments across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Africa. That work meant building bridges between sectors that rarely work together, especially between telecoms and everyone else. StratoLabs still works that way, connecting the organisations that see a threat with the ones that pay for it.
What is your biggest achievement as an organisation?
Building a threat intelligence partner network. We exchange mobile threat intelligence, identity intelligence and malware data with cyber security companies and technology platforms so that signals seen in one place protect users in another. Those partnerships give our clients a view of threats that no single organisation has on its own.
What prompted you to become a member of ScotlandIS?
StratoLabs is headquartered in Edinburgh, and we want to contribute to Scotland’s cyber and tech community. Scottish companies are building strong security and fintech products, and many of them look to the US as their next market. We can help them get there. They can also tap into our threat intelligence partner network, whether as partners sharing intelligence or as clients using it. ScotlandIS is the best place to meet them.
What do you see as the main challenges for the tech industry in the UK and Scotland?
Scaling beyond the home market. UK cyber companies often have excellent technology but underestimate how different US buying, regulation and sales cycles are. Funding makes that harder. Scottish companies can raise far less capital than their US competitors, so they have to go further with less. Fraud is the second challenge. It moves faster than any one sector can respond, so mobile network operators, banks and tech platforms have to share intelligence. The UK does this better than many markets, but the gap between who sees fraud and who pays for it hasn’t closed anywhere. Finally, AI adoption is outpacing the security controls around it, and smaller firms need practical help to keep up.
