This Skills Roundtable is being held in association with St Andrews University and Fife College as an opportunity for ScotlandIS members to provide insight into skills requirements for the sector.
Throughout the event we will discuss gaps and mismatches within Higher Education (HE)/Further Education (FE), and requirements from industry. We will discuss the skills that are required in specific areas across Scotland, explore the level of skills required by industry, and look at how qualification levels impact roles.
What is the demand for qualifications over experience, and what are the barriers to accessing that training?
It is hoped that the audience will leave with a better grasp of the skills rquirements across Scotland, and that educational institutions gain a clearer understanding of sector requirements to ensure the training they are providing is relevant.

Join our series of events, ScotlandIS Tech Tidbits, on the first Tuesday of every month!
These 30 minute webinars will be short, informative sessions on a variety of topics, from exporting to cybersecurity, cloud computing to procurement, and many more.
Each event will feature a ScotlandIS member offering their expert insights and advice on the topic in hand, however you do not need to be a member to attend these talks.
For our September event, we’ll be joined by Stephen Murphy, Enterprise Account Manager at Quest.
Imagine you’re in a room full of mismatched spreadsheets, each one insisting it knows who “Customer 123” is, but none of them agree. That’s where Stephen’s story begins. He’ll walk you through the moment Quest finally said “Enough!” and ran their data only to discover they had been carrying around 127 duplicate fields like extra luggage.
Next comes the secret weapon, a lineage-hunting bot that mapped every column in minutes and gave Quest the confidence to launch a dashboard people actually wanted to use. Along the way Stephen will stay honest with three gut-check questions: Does it bring value? Can it last? Is it doable? He will finish with a quick look at AI that can sketch data models on the fly, and leave you with one dare: go home, retire one dusty report, and start making your data lovable.

Are you confident in your organisation’s ability to detect cyber threats?
Join speakers from Acumen Cyber and EY to discuss Cyber Threat Detection.
Understanding the assets that you have, key vulnerabilities and indicators of compromise can be challenging. There are a number of frameworks that can be used to establish cyber maturity and suggest good practice – but what are the practical implications of this?
Using the example of the NCSC Cyber Assessment Framework (CAF) (which is increasingly a requirement or regulatory obligation in the public sector), we’ll look at the following topics:
- The changing threat landscape
- What are the objectives of CAF, and what are they trying to demonstrate?
- Lessons learned from supporting clients to assess where they are against CAF (including sector specific profiles), including:
– Detecting cyber security events across dispersed IT / OT environments.
– Escalating, classifying and responding to verified cyber events

Event Details
Are your products CRA compliant?
In this session you will learn about the requirements of the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), a wide-ranging framework governing the cybersecurity of digital products sold in the EU.
What you’ll learn
- Understand if your product is covered under the CRA legislation
- Understand your obligations in order to comply with the CRA
- Understand the requirements for the handling of security vulnerabilities throughout the lifecycle of your digital product
Description
The EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) was approved by the EU on 10th December 2024. There is a 3-year transition period with partial implementation in September 2026 before full compliance in December 2027. With some requirements starting in 19 months, businesses must act quickly to ensure compliance and avoid penalties.
The CRA has been issued to address the significant cost of Cybercrime in the EU (estimated to be over 5Tn Euro) which is often performed by exploiting inadequate security in the software used within digital products. The CRA was passed to protect consumers and businesses by ensuring that everyday devices like smartwatches, baby monitors, and routers meet a certain level of security throughout their lifecycle.
The CRA defines mandatory cybersecurity standards for digital products in the EU.
The session will help you understand the timetable for the CRA, the scope of products addressed by the CRA and the responsibilities of the manufacturers in using the software supply chain.
You will learn about the mandatory security requirements which need to be implemented in the design and production of any digital product in order to comply with the CRA. We’ll also help you learn how to demonstrate compliance with the requirements of the CRA.

Event Details
As cybersecurity professionals, we operate in a high-stakes environment where evolving threats and the responsibility of protecting critical systems demand constant vigilance. This relentless pressure, coupled with the weight of potential consequences, significantly erodes performance and compromises cyber resilience.
The 24/7 nature of our work, driven by the fear of missing a critical threat or experiencing a major breach, creates an overwhelming workload. This sustained stress directly impacts cognitive function, which can lead to critical errors in judgment, missed security indicators, and an ongoing struggle to maintain focus and vigilance. Ultimately, this diminishes individual and team effectiveness, making us more vulnerable to cyberattacks.
This workshop will address these critical challenges, emphasising why managing mental wellbeing is fundamental to our overall cyber resilience — at individual, team, and organisational levels.
Event Objectives:
• Raise Awareness: Highlight the scale of mental health challenges in the industry and the psychosocial hazards which commonly cause stress at work.
• Promote Self-Care: Equip participants with practical self-care strategies to enhance individual mental well-being and, by extension, performance.
• Foster Team Support: Provide leaders with strategies to support team well?being, strengthening collective resilience.
• Reduce Stigma: Foster safe spaces for open discussion on mental health to reduce the stigma surrounding seeking help.
• Industry Focus: Update on the work of the Mental Health in Cyber Security Foundation (MHinCS Foundation) and its Charter.
