Executive Summary
MacRebur Limited, based in Lockerbie in the South of Scotland, manufactures high-performance sustainable polymers for the global asphalt industry. Since 2016, we’ve pioneered the use of waste plastics in road construction, helping reduce reliance on virgin materials and lowering carbon emissions. Our products—MR6 and MR8—are used in roads across the UK and internationally, from New Zealand to the USA. We operate one of the most advanced polymer labs in the sector, and our Scottish facility houses bespoke machinery and technical expertise unmatched in the industry. Key achievements include receiving ISO accreditation from SGS for our Carbon Savings Declaration, being the first recycled polymer supplier to publish EPD’s, working with our UK based clients to achieve their Clause 942 accreditation, winning the Virgin Voom award and representing the UK Government as ambassadors for COP26.
The Challenge
Globally, asphalt production relies heavily on virgin polymers and bitumen—materials with high carbon footprints and significant environmental costs. These components are used to enhance road durability, but their production contributes to climate change and resource depletion. MacRebur set out to challenge this status quo by offering a cost efficient, lower-carbon, circular alternative that reduces dependency on oil-based products.
The Solution
Using patented technology and bespoke machinery, MacRebur transforms waste plastics into high-quality polymers that replace or reduce the need for bitumen in asphalt mixes. MR6 is designed to replace polymer-modified bitumen, while MR8 reduces the overall bitumen content. Both products deliver measurable carbon savings and cost efficiencies for asphalt producers, while supporting national and international sustainability goals.
The Impact
MacRebur products are now used daily in road construction across the UK, USA, Spain, Moldova, Bahrain and Malaysia. Each year Macrebur products go into over 1 Million tonnes of asphalt saving in the region of 5,000 tonnes of carbon. We continue to expand our reach through manufacturing licence agreements and strategic partnerships with major construction firms.
Future Plans
MacRebur continues to engage with international clients to establish local manufacturing facilities across the globe. At the same time, we remain firmly committed to our Scottish base—where our innovation was born and continues to evolve.
We will continue to work closely with local councils in Scotland and across the UK, supporting their ambitions to reduce CO₂e emissions in line with Net Zero targets, without compromising on the cost or performance of asphalt surfaces.
We are also proud to support UK-based clients pursuing international growth, with new facilities planned in Europe, the United States, and South America.
