Executive Summary
Turnbull & Scott, established in 1933, designs and manufactures energy-efficient heating, cooling and heat recovery systems for industrial and commercial sectors. What makes us unique is our blend of proven engineering expertise and in-house design software, enabling bespoke solutions that thrive even in the harshest environments.
Our innovation pipeline is led by M-TES (Mobile Thermal Energy Storage)—a first-of-its-kind technology that captures waste heat and delivers it where fixed networks aren’t viable.
Backed by Scottish Government Green Heat and SMART:SCOTLAND awards, M-TES is progressing from feasibility to prototype in 2025.
With a trusted track record across industries from food & drink to nuclear, we continue to help businesses cut costs and carbon on their path to net zero.
The Challenge
A huge amount of industrial heat is wasted every year because factories and plants are often located far from the buildings or networks that could use it.
Traditional fixed pipe infrastructure is expensive, slow to deploy, and often not viable in rural or hard-to-reach areas.
This means valuable energy is lost, while businesses and communities continue to rely on carbon-intensive heating.
The Solution
Turnbull & Scott’s M-TES (Mobile Thermal Energy Storage) provides a flexible alternative by capturing waste heat in transportable units.
These can be delivered where it’s needed—such as district heating networks or commercial buildings—unlocking energy that would otherwise be discarded.

The Impact
M-TES turns waste into a resource, reducing carbon emissions, lowering energy bills, and opening new revenue streams for industry.
Supported by Scottish Government Green Heat and SMART:SCOTLAND funding, the project is moving from design stage into prototype development in 2025.
This positions Scotland at the forefront of clean heat innovation.

Future Plans
By the end of 2025, Turnbull & Scott plan to have completed a range of Mobile Thermal Energy Stores and a selection software tool to model and optimise heat recovery across the full range of use cases.
This will enable deployment of the first demonstrator sites in 2026.
